NEWS: Two bills in the South Dakota legislature would cut the tax on food: HB1214 and HB1216, two different approaches. Ask your state legislators to support them. Either one would be helpful.

Senate bill 120 would raise the food tax along with other sales tax during the summers. Urge legislators to lower the rate for food when the rate for non-food goes up. Kids are home in summer and hungry.

1. People are really struggling for food. Some even wait in food lines. Yet South Dakota is one of the few states continuing to tax groceries. "No other tax so directly takes food off people's tables."
2. The refund system does not meet the need.
It reaches only 264 households in the whole state!
3. South Dakota could end this unfair tax, as most other states have done. We could phase it out, or end at least the state portion all at once.
